Why is February the shortest month? It was the last month added to the calendar by the Romans, in order to break up the long drag of winter. It got the leftovers – so only 28 days. Even so, many northern countries still find February needs a break, and have added statutory holidays. The US began celebrating Presidents Day in ’68, and Canada Family Day in ’90, both adding participating states/provinces over the years. The Oscars moved to February in 2011, with their earliest date ever this year – Feb 22.
